It is quite hard to look in the mirror and formulate an honest opinion of how we may have achieved or fallen short of our goals.

If you are the type to look past your shortcomings and always see the bright side of things then looking back can be beneficial. However if you are the sort to become completely depressed and miserable by what you see as failures, then reminiscing can be fraught with dangers.

In my journey of the anecdote, that has included encounters with both failings and success, I have fortunately been able to grow and learn from my mistakes. Whether or not 2012 will see me making some of the same errors remains to be seen. I am certain of one fact and that is I will always keep forging ahead and only look back with the full intention of moving forwards.

This “Word of the Week” is of course, anecdote!

I had been living in America, New York, for three years and fell absolutely in love with the place.
However, having never truly experienced “real” snow, originally from the south of England, I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught that winter. With snow up to my thighs and I am five-foot-seven, mind you, I had never ever seen anything like it!
As much as the snow threw many spanners in the works for my American compatriots, I was still in love with New York several months after the snow had melted and the glimmer of Spring peeked it’s comforting promise of warmth into my world.
Now that I am in Spain for a while, I can sympathise with my friends in the US and in particular Connecticut, but you won’t catch me back there for quite some time!

And make sure that you check out the rest of my site for other great anecdote examples!

It’s not that the quality of produce in the USA was bad, it’s just that Spain is a hop skip and a jump away and their tomatoes are amongst the best I have ever tasted.

The bananas, although from further afield have great flavour and cost 1/3 the price of those in the USA.

This anecdote article isn’t a contest between the two continents, it is merely an observation and something that I have concluded all along, The fresh fruit and veg in this neck of the woods has more flavour, costs loads less and seems to be better quality. That might be down to the fact that the distance from farmer to your supermarket or local greengrocers is shorter.

In reality, you can get good food anywhere, the hard point is the price at the till. In my experience you pay more in the USA overall for your fresh foods than you would in the UK. So I chuckle to myself when I occasionally hear Brits complain about the price of food. They would be laughed out of the supermarket in the US!

Earlier this week I placed a rather terse and accusatory post on one of my social networking sites. It wasn’t pretty I can assure you.

I had felt slighted and a bit put off by the direction of the site that has been going downhill for a while. Forums are a dying breed and that, my dear, is a very sad thing indeed. Everyone just wants to “twitter” in short nonsensical bursts or “beat their chests” on other personal sites. Neither one tickles my fancy and both are rather off putting, in my view.

Once I hit the post button, I instantly regretted doing it. Rarely am I that impulsive but stress gets to us all occasionally. Luckily for me the few members left set me straight and I have to be grateful for that. It would have been easy for them to give it to me in the neck because I was acting like Shrek in a frock!

All is well now at etaBlog. Serenity has been restored.

Being a Brit and slightly green behind the ears when it comes to American presidential history, I was pleasantly surprised after reading an article a few months back concerning Lyndon B. Johnson.

It has been my belief that John F. Kennedy received all the credit in relation to getting the vote for African-Americans and other Civil Rights’ Legislation. However, it came to my knowledge that whilst, JFK got the ball rolling. Lyndon Johnson executed many of the actual bills and even went so far as to initiate new ones.

I’m not going to pretend to be an historian and this isn’t meant to be a history lesson. So I am not going to reiterate dates and laws here in specific detail because you can find that sort of information anywhere on the Internet or in reference books.

What I would like to point out is the little appreciated fact that President Johnson was a prominent and determined advocate for the same rights for all American citizens. Coming from the South and being able to convince many Southern Democrats to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and a year later the Voting Rights Act Bill was an almost insurmountable feat that he overcame.

It just goes to show that in spite of the fact that LBJ grew up in a segregated society that didn’t believe in it’s heart that all men were equal, he dismissed that ideal. It was his determination to give all Americans the right to fair employment, fair housing and equal education; that is a testament to the greatness of his person. Therefore his body of work is well deserving of this category and his character goes above and beyond any dutiful call.

I’ve always enjoyed a good long walk. Now that autumn is knocking on our door, it is even more present in my mind. The days are a little cooler and the air slightly more crisp. This allows for a more comfortable walk and in my view a more enjoyable one.

In this age of TV, computers and many more people working from home, our lives have become far too sedentary. I live at my computer screen and find that time goes by so quickly, it is dark outside before you know it. So this Fall I am committed to setting up at least half-an-hour each day to walking.

Studies have shown that it does not take a lot of walking for you to see and feel the benefits. You do not even have to walk that fast. Just getting out and about is sufficient to make a difference to your well being.

There is another benefit to walking. It can help clear your mind and refresh it – allowing you to ready yourself for any tasks that lie ahead. So if you are like me and somewhat in a rut or have come up against a wall, put down tools and go out for a quick stroll. You will come back feeling less stressed and more focused.

Let me know your thoughts on this subject and I will be certain to let everyone know how my daily scheduled walks work out.

Cheers!

It is a Bird of Prey but looks so approachable and regal. The dichotomy of a Bird of Prey being epitomized in many cartoons and children shows as a cuddly wise old buddy belies its steely hunting skills.

The owl’s wide round face is designed as a sort of satellite dish, allowing it to funnel in noises from great distances and tune its hearing onto possible prey. This same trait enables the owl to catch prey sitting several inches beneath packed snow. It is a creature simply designed to hunt and kill.

The video below encapsulates this fascinating bird in all its glory and at its most magnificent. We find it breathtakingly beautiful and we hope that you are equally impressed.
We try to make the majority of our articles anecdotal in nature.

By definition, the word “anecdote” means a funny or intriguing personal piece of narration. But the meaning has broadened to include tales of others with biographical elements and original anecdotes modified into more fictional stories. Humorous anecdotes are not intended to be funny but rather reveal some sort of truth that unveils the very essence of a subject matter.

At etaBlog, we believe that anecdotes are one of the best ways to peak a reader’s interests and express our true beliefs. At the same time, this blog is all about disseminating information in a way that is easy to understand and enjoyable.

So this week’s word is the “very essence” of etaBlog and we hope that you will be entertained by our little anecdotes.

These are just some of the awesome things we do with technology! etaBlog has written the Twitter version of the “Lord’s Prayer” or what we call the “Twitter Prayer”.

The Twitter Prayer

Ah Twitter, are thou my heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Twitter has come,
thy will be done,
on internet as it is in heaven
Give us a tweet our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who haven’t followed us.
And spam us is the temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever. Tweet again.
