On Thor’s Day Anecdote – April 29

Timo Perez New York Mets On Thor's DayOn Thor’s Day – April 29, 1913 U.S. Patent 1,060,378 for the “Separable Fastener” also known as the Zipper was granted. Origins of the first zipper can be traced back as far as 1851.

It wasn’t until 1913 that Gideon Sundback a Swedish-American inventor and engineer invented and patented the idea. He called it the “Separable Fastener”, however the name “zipper” wasn’t  created until BF Goodrich used it n a pair of boots.  You never know what anecdote you’ll find next,  here at etaBlog!

Personal Tax Anecdote

So today is D-Day for the majority of Americans when it comes to filing your annual income tax return.

I read somewhere that around 50% of Americans actually end up paying NO federal income tax because of all the deductions and exemptions now available. It does make you think when so many people complain about paying income tax and that it should be lowered!

Anyway, from a personal anecdote point of view, I must add that I have paid my share of taxes, whether it be state taxes or sales taxes or even taxes on petrol. It all adds up in the end. I just want to do my bit and make certain that my contributions are used in the most efficient way to achieve the best results.

Venus in the Sky with Diamonds – A Planet’s Anecdote

Having a partner who is a meteor gazer afficianado has its good points. I have learnt so many facts about the structure and makeup of the heavens above us.

The planet Venus has become my favourite heavenly body to gaze at when we go for our evening walks. It sits in the western sky and blazes like a radiant star, as if to disguise its true identity, that of a planet.

Venus is known as Earth’s sister planet because it is similar in size. It get its name from the Roman Goddess of Love Venus. Its easy to see why this planet was named after the Goddess of Love because it is truly a thing of beauty.

Achieving Your Goals Anecdote

Some of you may know, I had a problem with my blood pressure being quite high. Well after several weeks of eating a low sodium diet and walking every day I have managed to lower it to a number that is considered normal, 121 over 72.

On a personal anecdote note this achievement has made me feel extremely proud. It has given me the confidence to make plans and follow through, something that has been a weakness of mine in the past…

As a bonus I am also a few pounds lighter and a bit trimmer and it seems as if I accomplished all of this without trying too hard. It takes determination and dedication to keeping to your regimen, but, by god, it is worth it!

A Baseball Season Starts Anecdote

I am still a big footie (soccer) fan and will die a consummate Tottenham Hotspurs fan, but after living in America for sixteen years, I have grown to love American Baseball.

Monday was opening day for my favorite baseball team, The New York Mets. It started well and they crushed the Florida Marlins by a score of seven to one. It gave us Mets fans hopes because last season was a washout.

There are some real American traditions that I adore and going to a baseball game on a Sunday Afternoon is one of them. I have several anecdotes about going to games on a crisp Spring afternoon or a warm Summer’s evening.

Hopefully this year will be filled with many trips to Citi-Field, the NY Mets home ground. Let’s just hope that this season will be filled with cheers and not tears!

An Anecdote About the Bean

As my partner and I attempt to fill our diet with more heart healthy foods, we have fallen head over heels for the bean.

Beans are high in soluble fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates and iron. The soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol, thereby being excellent for your heart. They are also touted as being a good cancer prevention dietary supplement.

So here’s a quick black bean salad recipe which will power up your immune system and strengthen your heart as well: -

Ingredients: -

2 cups of cooked and chilled black beans
2 stalks of celery sliced
1/2 cup of finely chopped red or yellow onion
3 cups of roughly chopped spinach
1 avocado sliced

For dressing: -

1/4 cup of lemon juice or to taste
1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon of honey
Pinch of pepper
Pinch of salt free all purpose seasoning

To prepare: -

Mix the black beans, celery, chopped onions in a bowl and toss with half of the dressing. Toss the spinach with the other half of the dressing. Place the black bean mixture on top of a bed of the spinach. Place slices of the avocado on top of the lot and voila!

Enjoy!
